Andromeda Independent Radio was an FM pirate set up by Bob Gardner and Andy Howlett in 1978. After several tests it made its first proper broadcast in November 1979 from Harrop Edge in Mottram, but this was cut short by suspicious activity nearby. The programmes were pre-recorded on cassette and replayed into the transmitter on site (usually the top of a hill). Bob & Andy were the only two regular presenters, but Mark Terry made occasional appearances with his 'Free Radio News' spot and ex-Piccadilly DJ James Stannidge also made an appearance. Power level was low (about 1watt), but coverage of the target area of East Manchester was generally good. Andromeda made a real effort to become a community-based station but despite a steady trickle of mail, support for this idea was poor and Andromeda closed in late 1983. The programme excerpts in this collection were all recorded 'off air' by listeners across Manchester. The jingles come from original studio tapes or copies.
